Why Luo Council of Elders Trustees Want Governor Nyongo Jailed

1 min read

Three registered Trustees of the Luo Council of Elders Calvin Okoth Lukio, Lawi Raburu Javan, and Jane Akinyi Midialo want Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyongo, Deputy Governor Mathew Owili, Kisumu County Manager Abala Wanga, and the Acting County Secretary jailed for six months over contempt of court.

The trustees say, that despite an earlier court order barring the four from holding any activities at the Ofafa Memorial Hall in Kisumu, the county government officials have continued their activities at Ofafa, giving the 22nd December 2023 coronation of Odungi Randa as Luo Ker, and the 20th January 2024 memorial of Kenya’s first vice president Oginga Odinga as examples.

The claimants say that despite a ruling by Environment Courts Judge Esther Asati on 15th December 2023 blocking the use of the Ofafa Memorial Hall, the county government of Kisumu four days later on 19th December embarked on heavy demolition which led to the eviction of tenants and destruction of parts of the hall.

The matter is set for submission at the courts on 6th March, when a ruling date will be set.
