In a strategic move to showcase its commitment to renewable energy, Kenya officially announced its intention to host the prestigious World Geothermal Congress (WGC) in 2029.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira made the grand announcement at the ongoing 2024 Kenya Geothermal Congress in Nairobi, highlighting the nation’s aspiration to lead in sustainable energy practices.

“Hosting the WGC 2029 will give us a competitive edge not just in Africa but in the global energy market and bolster our position as a global leader in renewable energy deployment,” stated Wachira, underlining the significance of the event in attracting international investments in geothermal projects.

The event serves as a platform for industry players, academics, financial institutions, governments, NGOs, and communities to collaborate on solutions for a sustainable future.

Wachira confirmed the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum’s full support for the bid, foreseeing increased geothermal development and a substantial shift towards renewable energy to drive Kenya’s industrial growth.

As Kenya marks progress in harnessing its estimated 10,000MW geothermal potential, the upcoming Congress signifies a pivotal moment in the country’s journey towards achieving a 100% transition to renewable energy by 2030, reinforcing its position among the top global geothermal developers with an impressive 940MW installed capacity.
