Council of Governors Chairperson and Embu Governor Martin Wambora is now backing Speaker Justin Muturi’s coronation as Mt Kenya’s spokesperson hours after meeting ODM leader Raila Odinga in Nairobi.

Wambora together with governors Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) and Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi) all from Mt Kenya East, has expressed confidence in Speaker Muturi’s leadership and are urging him to unite the region ahead of 2022.

”Going forward, we cannot approach the national politics as a divided house. It is now the time to put our house in order and we have faith in Speaker JB Muturi, to drive the agenda of our region to beyond 2022 with the confidence he has been bestowed,”  a joint statement from the three governors read in part.

According to Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, Muturi is the best bet for Mt Kenya given his proximity to power and experience.

“We agreed to look for others who will represent us there; that is why Muturi is there. He is our best bet because he is our nearest neighbour, he is experienced, and he has been anointed.”

On Tuesday, Governor Martin Wambora, who is the CoG’s fifth chairman, Kisii Governor James Ongwae (vice-chairman), the outgoing CoG Chief Executive Jacqueline Mogeni, and Mary Mwiti, who will be the acting CEO held a five-hour closed-door meeting with Raila Odinga at his Capitol Hill offices in Nairobi.

Meanwhile, the newly crowned Mt Kenya spokesperson has convened a meeting in the region next week to bring the leaders together and also begin talks of a regional political party for 2022.
