The third batch of Kenyan police officers preparing for deployment to Haiti has commenced training as part of a significant international mission. This group, consisting of officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), Administration Police, and Anti-Stock Theft Units, began their rigorous training two weeks ago.
Approximately 200 GSU officers are training at the National Police Service, Embakasi ‘A’ Training College, while around 400 officers from the Administration Police and Anti-Stock Theft Units are stationed at Embakasi ‘B’ College. These officers were selected during a rigorous process in November last year, with specific criteria including a minimum of five years of service and proficiency in English.
A senior officer, who requested anonymity, stated, “The entire training process will last about 18 weeks, meaning the earliest we can send them to Haiti is December or early next year.” The training encompasses physical activities and lessons in international relations, followed by specialized weapon handling and close-quarter combat techniques.
President William Ruto previously flagged off the first group of 400 officers on June 24, with a total of 1,000 officers set to be deployed. The officer added, “Upon completion, they will return to Embakasi for final preparations before departure.” Additionally, the officers will receive a week off-duty before their mission, ensuring they are well-rested and prepared for the challenges ahead.
