President William Ruto has today Tuesday, August 27, 2024 officially launched Raila Odinga’s campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position, marking a pivotal moment in Kenya’s diplomatic efforts.
Dr. Korir Sing’Oei, the Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, will lead a diverse team of seven, representing various African regions, to bolster Odinga’s bid.
Ruto announced, “Kenya endorses his candidacy unreservedly, and we commit wholeheartedly to supporting his candidature, his vision, and his leadership.” He highlighted that Odinga’s extensive experience and understanding of African and global affairs are vital for the AUC’s future.
The campaign has already garnered endorsements from at least seven African presidents, including Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Felix Tshisekedi of the DRC. This broad support reflects a strategic approach to unify the continent behind Odinga’s vision.
Key figures in the campaign include former Kenyan ambassador Elkanah Odembo, who will co-chair the committee, and notable diplomats like Mahboub Maalim and Professor Makau Mutua.
Ruto emphasized the importance of this campaign, stating, “This is not just about personal ambition; it’s about elevating Kenya’s role in Africa.”
As the election process for AUC leadership positions begins, the stakes are high. The AUC Chairperson election will take place during the African Union Summit in February 2025, with Odinga’s team poised to navigate the complex political landscape ahead.
