Public Health and Professional Standards PS Mary Muthoni Muriuki says Kenya and the United Kingdom are making a significant progress in the development of new recruitment guidelines for Kenyan nurses going to work at the UK National Health Service (NHS).

Speaking on Wednesday during a consultation with officials from the Ministry of Health and British High Commission, Muriuki noted that the new guidelines under the Kenya-UK Bilateral Agreement for Collaboration on Healthcare Workforce, once developed, will streamline preparation and the recruitment process to open more opportunities for Kenyan nurses.

”Progress is being made in the development of recruitment guidelines for nurses under the Kenya-UK Bilateral Agreement for Collaboration on Healthcare Workforce,” she said.

Already, the Ministry of Health is making preparations to send a second batch of nurses to the UK as part of this bilateral agreement. The first batch left the country in June 2022.

PS Muriuki also reiterated Kenya Kwanza administration’s unwavering commitment to ensure successful execution of the Kenya-UK deal, further underscoring the significance to Kenyan nurses.

UK and Kenya governments signed the Kenya-UK Bilateral Agreement for Collaboration on Healthcare Workforce in July 2021. Kenya is expected to send at least 20,000 nurses to the UK in three years.
