Ministry of Sports and Youth Affair CS Hon Ababu Namwamba on Tuesday hosted Kakamega County Governor, H.E. Fernandes Barasa, for a follow-up conversation to firm up the National and County Government partnership for the completion of Bukhungu Stadium.

The legendary turf situated in Western Kenya has not only been earmarked to host the CHAN continental games slated for September this year, but is also designated as a possible key ground to host a couple of matches for AFCON’27.

Critical in the meeting featuring the Sports PS Eng. Peter Tum, Sports Kenya DG Pius Metto, Kakamega CECs among other technical experts, were the deliberate plans to FastTrack and accelerate the construction of Bukhungu ahead of a potential CAF inspection at the fall of April.

Delighted at the partnership, CS Ababu emphasized the need to expedite the priority points, lauding Kakamega as a cathedral of Sports with Bukhungu as the undisputed shrine of football, which unequivocally needed full Government support.

“Kakamega has been a ‘hotbed’ of Talent. The fan base and the enthusiasm exhibited over the years has been on of a kind.” CS added.

He further appreciated recalling the hospitable hosting roles it played to the successful Kenya Secondary School Ball Games and the recent CECAFA U19.

Presenting the status report, Governor Barasa highlighted the 40,000-capacity stadium as a 3-phase project with a 45 percent score. Currently diving into phase 2. He also expressed cash flow challenges to which he sought a National Government financial backing.

Sports PS, Eng. Peter Tum resolutely retorted with the Ministry’s intention to avail resources to enable the completion of Bukhungu to International Standard.
