Billionaire and business Mogul Jimmy Wanjigi is embroiled in a Sh1.37 million court battle with a luxury clothing brand.

The case dates back to 2019 where Wanjigi, a likely Presidential aspirant for the 2022 elections refused to pay Fazal-The Luxury Boutique for clothes supplied to him on credit. The items are two Brioni Jackets and six Ermenegildo Zegna trousers.

In one of the court documents, the trader reportedly reached out to Wanjigi to have him make the payments with zero success.

“Hi, Jimmi, can I come to collect $9,675 (Sh1.05 million) and one pair of trousers that you said you’ll return?” a Whatsapp message allegedly sent to Wanjigi read.

I’m sure I am not alone, but I have never heard nor known such a luxurious brand existed in Kenya until recently.

A quick look into Fazal-The Luxury Boutique on Instagram reveals it is located at Yaya Centre, Sarit Centre and Westgate Mall.

A Brioni jacket is said to cost at least Sh200,000 depending on the make, material and design. Now do the maths considering Wanjigi ordered two of the jackets.

Ultimately, the tycoon ordered 6 Ermenegildo Zegna trousers, which come in different designs and can either be office wear casual wear, or even jogger sets.

A pair of Ermenegildo Zegna trousers go for approximately $300 (Sh30,000) with the prices ranging upwards. Thus, ordering for six sums the total into hundreds of thousands.

In the court ruling, Milimani principal magistrate D.M Kivuti ordered Wanjigi to pay the Luxury brand the owed amount but he appealed terming the claims as mere hearsay.

According to Wanjigi, the magistrate who handled the case twisted the facts to fit the complainant’s narrative which he argued, should not have been the case.

“I aver that the contradictions, white lies, and inconsistencies in the statements of the plaintiff’s (Ravello) witnesses namely Peter Macithi and Aziz Fazal could only be dealt with through cross-examination during a full trial of the said suit, and not through an interlocutory application,” Wanjigi said in his appeal.

This brings into perspective the class differences in Kenyan society. It is 2021, the world is battling a pandemic that has taken lives, rendered people jobless and paralyzed the economy. The other side however consists of wealthy billionaires who only hear about tough economic times on tv, radio or newspapers.

This is where Sauti Sol’s “Heri Ulie kwenye Range Rover, ama ucheke kwenye Boda Boda” lyrics come into light as who wouldn’t want to wear a Sh200,000 jacket. I mean, there are common problems, then there are billionaire problems that the rich and wealthy have.
