BBI was a great idea for Mt Kenya, Moses Kuria

Gatundu South legislator Moses Kuria says even though the BBI has been thrown out, it had very good ideas some of which were going to directly influence the Mt Kenya region especially in the block’s one man-one vote-one shilling rallying call.

Despite being a good document, the MP says BBI had to fall because it was being promoted by wrong people i.e -President Uhuru Kenyatta and Rt Hon Raila Odinga.

”The BBI project was largely a set of some very few good ideas executed by the wrong people, in the wrong way for the wrong reasons. Good it has fallen but the question of Mt Kenya Counties getting too little of the National cake while contributing soo much in baking that cake will have to be resolved one way or the other. Na sio tafadhali,” he wrote on Saturday.

If the initiative had sailed through,Kiambu alone was to get the lion’s share of the 70 extra constituencies proposed in the project, something that aimed to balance distribution of resources evenly according to population.

In the proposals for new constituencies, Nairobi was to get 11, Mombasa 9 while Kilifi 4 of the 70 new seats.

In the breakdown, Meru would get 2, Kirinyaga 2, Nakuru 2, Nyeri 1, Kakamega 2, Nandi 2, Kericho 2, Vihiga 1, Kajiado 2, Kitui 2, Makueni 1, Uasin Gishu 1, Nyandarua 1, Laikipia 1, Embu 1 and Kisii 1.

Creation of the extra seats, according to the BBI co-secretary Paul Mwangi, was added to help safeguard some constituencies at risk of being wiped out by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through boundaries review.
