Last night, President William Ruto secretly flew out of the country to Dubai on an impromptu viaccompanied by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Abdil Khawaja, the Safaricom Chairperson.
According to reports, the secret meeting in Dubai was to cut deals on road construction, and the importation of beans, maize, rice, and sugar.
Khawaja is also a prominent lawyer, real estate business magnate, a close ally of the president, and one of the key financiers of the Kenya Kwanza 2022 campaigns.
At the height of his presidential campaigns on 21st November 2020, William Ruto accompanied by Adbil Khawaja secretly flew out of the country to Dubai where he met the then Nigerian Vice President Abubakar Atiku, Nigerian billionaire Timi Frankas, well as Dubai business tycoons to boost his financial war chest.
The meeting was also attended by the CEO of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB), Mr. Sandeep Chouhan, and Mr. Khawaja, who doubled up Ruto’s personal lawyer and business associate during the trip.
On January 6th, 2023, John Ngumi resigned as Safaricom Chairperson barely 6 months after his appointment by President Uhuru in July last year. He was replaced with Mr. Adil Khawaja.
Khawaja is a former KCB Bank Non-Executive Director. He is also a managing partner at Denton Hamilton Harrison and Matthews, and a leading name in the estate, environmental, and planning industry, and commercial litigation and dispute resolution circles.
