Four years after taking a political hiatus, former Senator Johnstone Muthama has announced his return to the arena and will be seeking the Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2022. Making the announcement on Friday morning, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chair says after 2017, he has been receiving delegates requesting him to get back to political leadership.
”Since 2017 when I took a break from active politics, I have been receiving delegates requesting me to get back to political leadership. Some of their concerns include, but are not limited to, having the right candidate. For the Machakos Gubernatorial contest in the 2022 general elections. Therefore, if the wish of Machakos County electorate is to serve them, then I have accepted their will,” Muthama tweeted.
The 2022 Machakos gubernatorial contest is one of the interesting ones that will see three major political camps fight it out. Despite losing to Maendeleo Chap Chap party in 2017 elections, the Wiper party still believes it dominates the county after a successful win in the senatorial by-election in April this year.
Among the politicians who are said to be eying the seat are former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti, former Machakos Deputy Governor Benard Kiala, Mwala MP Vincent Musau, and his Mavoko counterpart Patrick Makau.
