The Ministry of Trade and Investment is behind today’s demonstrations against Chinese business owners currently in the country. This is according to multiple sources who confided in this publication.

On Tuesday, traders from Nyamakima and Dubois in downtown Nairobi held a protest march against Chinese traders on Tuesday morning.

The traders were joined by their counterparts from Kamukunji in demanding the protection of their businesses from what they termed a “Chinese invasion”.

The sources say the demonstrators expect a permanent closure of China Square Unicity Mall or a takeover of the establishment by the Nyamakima, Eestleigh, and Muthurwa traders after today’s demonstrations, with the government giving ‘public interest’ as an excuse to shield it from a diplomatic spat with the Chinese government.

Today’s demos come on the back of the temporary closure of China Square Unicity Mall along Thika Road.
