The Service Party (TSP) leader Mwangi Kiunjuri will be going back to his Laikipia East constituency to run as a Member of Parliament next year.
Kiunjuri, a former cabinet secretary in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime had previously held the seat for five years between 2002 and 2007, before losing to Jubilee Party’s Anthony Kimaru Kamau in 2013. The seat is currently held by Jubilee Party’s Amin Deddy Mohamed Ali.
”Quarter of a century later, the self-made Mwangi Kiunjuri has gone back to where he was 25 years ago- He will be vying to be Laikipia East MP next year. One of the only two Cabinet Ministers Uhuru Kenyatta had the guts to fire throughout his 10 years in power, the self-made Kiunjuri is back to the Laikipia ashes where he rose from,” Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria disclosed on Sunday evening.

Currently, Kiunjuri is among party leaders supporting the Mt Kenya Unity Forum which is protecting fringe parties in Mt Kenya from being swallowed by the United Democratic Alliance, whose leader (William Ruto), insists any leader from the vote-rich region planning to back his 2022 presidential bid must first dissolve their political parties and join UDA.
Last month in Siakago, the TSP leader said presidential hopefuls seeking the support of the vote rich Mt Kenya must ensure constitutional changes in the first 100 days of taking over the government, a departure from his earlier position that the country does not need a plebiscite in efforts to change the constitution for more resources to the counties.
“We cannot have one man one shilling one vote if we don’t have a referendum. So whoever wants our support must guarantee us that in the first 100 days, we will have a referendum. this should be an irreducible minimum for Mt Kenya region,” Kiunjuri said.
