Linda Mama to Transition to SHIF with Major Enhancements Starting October 1

1 min read

The Linda Mama programme, a vital initiative for maternal healthcare in Kenya, is set to transition to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) beginning October 1, introducing significant enhancements to its services. Launched in 2013, the programme aims to reduce high maternal mortality rates by providing free maternity care in public health facilities.

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni reassured Kenyans that the programme will not only continue but will be “bigger and better” under SHIF. This shift comes amidst concerns regarding the recent nullification of the Social Health Insurance Act, which established the new health scheme.

Key changes include standard delivery costs set at Ksh10,000 for normal deliveries, an increase from the previous Ksh5,000. For caesarean sections, coverage will rise to Ksh34,200, up from Ksh17,500, including a maximum three-day hospital stay. Additionally, SHIF aims to ensure universal access to care, covering complications for both mothers and newborns.

Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General of Health, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive necessary care, stating, “Through proxy means testing, we will identify the financial gap and the government will cover that cost.”

While many Kenyans are hopeful about enhanced benefits under SHIF, concerns linger due to ongoing legal uncertainties. The Linda Mama programme remains a critical resource for economically disadvantaged groups, and the public eagerly anticipates its seamless continuation amidst these changes.
