In a recent interview on Citizen TV, Social Health Authority (SHA) Chairperson Dr. Timothy Olweny has confirmed that contributions currently going to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will be transferred to the newly established SHA. Dr. Olweny assured Kenyans that there is no need for alarm during the transition in the health insurance sector.

Dr. Olweny stated, “Registration for SHA will begin in March for a 90-day period, as required by law. Contributions can start immediately, and even advanced NHIF payments will be pro-rated based on the new rates.” He emphasized the importance of a smooth transition, saying, “The key thing is to do it right.”

Furthermore, Dr. Olweny clarified that SHA will manage three funds – the Primary Healthcare Fund, Social Health Insurance Fund, and the Emergency Chronic and Critical Illness Fund – under a single body structure.

He highlighted the continuous provision of health insurance services during the transition period, ensuring that Kenyans will not experience any gaps in coverage.
