Wealthy farmers and individuals across the country will be able to cultivate and farm on parastatal lands if Agriculture CS nominee Mithika Linturi’s proposals for improving the country’s production are executed.

Public institutions including universities, correction facilities, and parastatals will hand over their idle land to private investors able to effectively utilise them for Agricultural production.

Kenya Railways, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, the East African Portland Cement, Kenya Prisons, and the University of Nairobi are among targetted institutions with huge tracts of idle land.

“If approved for appointment, I will quickly implement the Cabinet directive that parastatals with idle land release them for onward leasing to private individuals for production of food,” Mr. Linturi told the vetting panel.

In May this year, the Cabinet approved the seizure of idle land in an effort to boost Kenya’s food security and reduce the burden of the high cost of living.
