The past week has been awash with headlines and intense speculations, over the possibility of ODM leader Raila Odinga and DP William Ruto joining hands in 2022.
The talks hit a crescendo this Friday, when Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya told the media, that indeed he and DP Ruto met, and had talked about a possibility of working together in 2022. Oparanya is one of the ODM Party Deputy Leaders.
”He asked me about the coalitions we were working on and we told him that there was nothing concrete. He asked us if we can support him since he had put up a big war chest for 2022,” Oparanya said after a meeting with ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Those present at the meeting were Governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Anyang Nyongo (Kisumu), Senator James Orengo, and Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa.
Among those concerned with the Ruto-Odinga talks is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family. According to reports, President Uhuru’s camp is aware of the political ramifications of the two joining hands given their huge following in the country.
”His relationship with DP Ruto is severed and now, there are rumors of Raila joining Ruto. It will be interesting to watch because a Raila-Ruto alliance will change everything. Including Mt Kenya politics,” a source confided to this writer.
There are those who say, with the Hustler narrative taking shape and blurring tribal politics, a majority of Mt Kenya’s vote block in 2022, would buy economic mobilisation, as opposed to tribal whipping.
Also, accepting Raila by the two leaders (Uhuru during the Handshake and Ruto) will have an impact on Mt Kenya’s attitude towards the ODM leader in 2022.
The Deputy President has penetrated the populous region as evidenced by the number of legislators supporting UDA.
In the week that just ended, Raila Odinga’s Karen home has been a beehive of activities with top political leaders trooping in and out, for meetings.
