Speaker JB Muturi explains why he rejected DP Ruto’s offer

3 mins read

Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Bundi Muturi has vowed not to join hands with Deputy President William Ruto as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader seeks to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta. Speaking yesterday, the Democratic Party presidential candidate wondered why Ruto was sending emissaries to convince him into supporting the UDA supremo’s bid, yet he (Ruto) had fallen out with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

”I have been approached severally by some leaders to join the former PDR party, now UDA claiming that it’s a national party. Before the 2017 general election, we merged all our parties to form a national party, Jubilee. You ditched the party and formed your own party to compete with the president who is the party leader. Why should I join you and what’s the difference between UDA and Jubilee?” Speaker Muturi posed.

According to online reports, DP Ruto has been using Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi to convince his boss, Muturi to join the United Democratic Alliance, but as a running mate to UDA leader. It is believed this was what the 2022 presidential aspirant was referring to in his speech.

”People think that Mt Kenya can only produce a running mate. Kwanini tunajidharau hivi? Ati sisi kazi yetu ni kuenda kulamba lamba watu wengine huko ati sasa tunataka kukuwa namba mbili. The amount of Sacrifice the people of Mt Kenya have made for this country to be where it is then somebody says ati kujeni tutafute nambi mbili huku, I mean, hiyo ni madharau kubwa sana, ati anaangalia hawa anaona hawa wanafaa namba mbili, it’s not good,” Muturi added.

Apart from JB Muturi, Muranga governor Mwangi Wa Iria is the other known 2022 presidential aspirant from Mt Kenya, a region touted to produce the next deputy president once Uhuru retires as Head of State. Currently, Azimio Movement Raila Odinga and his rival William Ruto of UDA are shopping for the most suitable candidates for the runningmate position.

The names of Peter Kenneth, CS Peter Munya, Governors Nderitu Murrithi (Laikipia), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru), and Martha Karua have popped up severally as among possible names considered for the running mate position for Raila Odinga.
