President William Ruto has secured Ghana’s backing for Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union chairmanship.

During his State visit to Ghana, Ruto announced the mutual support agreement, stating, “Kenya will support Ghana’s candidature for the Secretary General of the Commonwealth.” This alliance underscores the strong partnership between the two nations in advancing the Pan-African Agenda.

Ruto’s discussions with Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, Accra, have paved the way for a promising collaboration. Ruto expressed gratitude, saying, “I thank you most sincerely for accepting to support Kenya’s candidature for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.”

The reciprocal support showcases a shared commitment to regional cooperation and development.

Furthermore, Raila Odinga’s bid to lead the AU Commission has gained momentum, with endorsements from key African leaders, including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni.

The upcoming elections in February 2025 will determine the new AU Commission chair, with Raila eyeing the position until 2028.

Ruto highlighted the necessity of reforms within the African Union to achieve Agenda 2063’s socio-economic development goals.

He affirmed, “These reforms are key to ensuring that the African Union Commission lives up to its founding aspirations.” Ghana and Kenya are poised to collaborate closely to drive these essential reforms forward.
