Plans underway to dethrone JB Muturi as Mt Kenya’s spokesperson

The Kiama Kia Ma and elders in the Gikuyu council will dethrone Speaker JB Muturi as the Mt Kenya spokesperson, following his controversial coronation earlier this year.

The resolution by Kiama Kia Ma comes a day after President Uhuru’s cousin Cpt Kungu Muingai was removed and replaced by Kinyua Mwangi as patron of Mt Kenya council of elders.

In March this year, factions emerged in the council after Kiama Kia Ma and Kikuyu elders denounced Muturi’s coronation, saying it had violated the region’s customs and was not done procedurally. Despite objections from the Kiama Kia Ma, Cpt Kungu Muingai and JB Muturi Capt Kungu went ahead and conducted the controversial ceremony.

It was this violation that led to the central leadership of Mt Kenya elders conducting a cleansing on the Mukurwe Wa Nyagathanga shrine, a few days after the Speaker of the National Assembly’s visit.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, the Kiama Kia Ma while meeting in Kieni resolved to back ODM leader Raila Odinga for the top seat in 2022. The Saturday event was also attended by Luo elders and a section of politicians from both Mt Kenya and Luo Nyanza.

Raila’s elder brother Dr Oburu Odinga, Siaya Senator James Orengo, MPs Otiende Amollo (Rarieda), and TJ Kajwang (Ruaraka) accompanied Luo elders in the visit.

”The cultural leaders should be our bridge between Uhuru and Raila as opposed to the political class and the civil servants, they will be connecting us with the two leaders. We will climb the mountain and we invite the Kikuyus to fish in our region,” Minority leader in the Senate, James Orengo said, sentiments which were supported by Dr. Oburu Oginga.

”My father said without Kenyatta there would be no freedom, my brother said Kibaki ‘tosha’, we would like the community to reciprocate while we promise we shall protect your businesses without suppression,” Dr. Oburu said.
