Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has told off Speaker Justin Muturi over his insistence on running for the presidency next year, saying Kenya has had enough of a president from the region and that the next Head of State will not be from the region.
Speaking when he hosted delegates of his new Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP), the Meru county boss said JB Muturi’s attempts to rally the country behind his presidential bid were futile and that the Mt Kenya region will only have the presidency after ten or twenty years.
”This time around we must accept that we will not get the presidency. let’s give ourselves about 10 to 20 years before we clinch power. There will be no president coming from Mt Kenya region and I’m sorry to say that even my friend Justin (Muturi) has tried so hard but he has seen that his chances are limited. We can look for something else because this time around we won’t get that seat,” the governor said.

Muturi, a native of the Mbeere community in Mt Kenya East has thrown his hat in the ring to fight for the presidency next year when President Uhuru, a Mt Kenya West native retires next year after being at the helm for a decade, from 2013. Uhuru succeeded Mwai Kibaki, also from Mt Kenya. He was the third President of Kenya.
The first President of Kenya was Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
Last week, Speaker Muturi who intends to run on the Democratic Party ticket urged Mt Kenya residents not to cast their vote for William Ruto, describing him as a wolf in a sheep’s skin.
“Today, he approaches you, enticing you as he jokes with you, but when he will win the presidency, and you knock at his door, you will be told to wait there, please. It is me who went directly to the people, so you as MP what are you telling me?” said Muturi, without mentioning Ruto by name, while also ruling out any possibilities of working with the deputy president in 2022.
