Attempts by PAA and Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) parties to leave the Azimio la Umoja Coalition have hit a brick wall following a declaration by the Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu that her office has no mandate to deregister a party once it complies with the law.

Governors Amason Kingi and Alfred Mutua had written to the Office of the Registrar of political parties asking to exit Azimio-One Kenya Political Party.

”Azimio is already a registered coalition political party in terms of section 7(7) of the Political Parties Act (Registration), Regulations 2019. Hence the registrar has no mandate to degazette PAA as per your request save for where due process outlined in the coalition agreement has been followed,” a letter from Anne Nderitu’s office reads in part.

The registrar told PAA and MCC they had met all conditions needed to be a member of the coalition and had forwarded agreement papers affirming commitment to the outfit.

”That PAA, as one of the constituent parties, duly executed the coalition agreement annexing the requisite documents including former PP19 declaring that the information submitted is true and correct.

MCC party, as a constitutional political party, executed the coalition agreement annexing the requisite documents including form pp19 declaring that the information submitted is true and correct,” Nderitu said.

The registrar also affirmed Azimio is already a registered coalition political party in terms of section 7 (7) of the political parties act 2011 and the political parties regulations 2019. Hence the office has no mandate to sanction withdrawal as per MCC and Pamoja African Alliance’s requests.
