Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appealed to his boss, President William Ruto, for forgiveness.
Mr Gachagua made an impassioned plea to Dr Ruto on Sunday, October 6, saying that while he was not aware of any wrongdoing, he wanted to be given another chance to serve Kenyans.
“I want to say to my brother, President William Ruto: if I’ve wronged you in our zeal to work, please find it in your heart to forgive me,” Mr Gachagua said during a church service in Karen, Nairobi.
The Deputy President, who will appear before parliament on Tuesday to defend himself, is accused of gross misconduct, violation of the constitution, corruption and is said to be insubordinate to his boss President Ruto.
He also apologized to Kenyans who called for his removal from office during the recently concluded public participation in a motion to impeach him.
“To the people of Kenya, in our service across the country, as we serve you, if there is anything we have done or said that you find unpalatable, that you find unacceptable, please find it in your heart to forgive me.”
Kenyans are now saying, if there is any wrong that the Deputy President has done by saying the truth, they have forgiven him, adding that saying the truth does not warrant being impeached.
”As a Kakamega voter, I forgive the Deputy President for saying the truth, which is not any offense. Why should he be impeached because of that?” a Lurambi constituency voter says.
Another Kenyan, from Kaptembwa, says the DP asking to be forgiven was not an admission of guilt but a strategic move by Gachagua setting up Ruto, especially following remarks by members of the clergy that Ruto and Gachagua should sit down, talk and forgive each other.
DP Gachagua has assembled a battery of 20 advocates including senior counsels to defend him both in parliament and at the courts beginning next week when the House will consider his impeachment motion.
