Kenyan police officers deployed to the United Nations-backed mission in Haiti stand to earn significant salaries, potentially reaching Ksh279,955 per month when allowances are included.

Each officer receives a base salary of Ksh182,242, with additional benefits greatly enhancing their monthly income.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on August 1, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, President William Ruto’s nominee for the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that the United Nations covers the salaries and insurance for these officers. “Our officers are covered, insured, and paid for by the United Nations, and therefore there is no cause for alarm,” Kindiki stated.

Research indicates that each officer earns $1,410 monthly, roughly translating to Ksh182,242, with an additional Mission Subsistence Allowance (MSA) of $756, equating to about Ksh97,713. This compensation structure is outlined by the UN and has been in effect with periodic adjustments since it was approved in 2014.

The Kenyan-led mission, authorized by the United Nations Security Council in October 2023, consists of 400 officers as part of a contingent of 1,000 police committed to restoring order in Haiti, plagued by gang violence.

Prof. Kindiki praised the efforts of the deployed officers, noting, “They have recovered critical infrastructure and engaged with gang leaders who are now willing to seek peace. Our officers are doing a commendable job, and we pray for their continued success.”
