President William Ruto on Tuesday, May 20, handed over the first set of affordable houses constructed in the Mukuru affordable housing project.
During the event held in Mukuru, the Head of State handed over 1,080 keys to new homeowners.
Ruto expressed the handing over ceremony as one of the most consequential days in his political career.
The development, which sits on 56 acres of land, is Kenya’s largest affordable housing project to date, featuring a total of 13,248 residential units.
While addressing the convocation, the elated Head of State kept on expressing how monumental the move is, breaking into praise songs, quoting bible verses and even saying a prayer.
He maintained that the project is a realization of the much-censured Affordable Housing project, noting it will serve as a silencer to his political detractors.
The Mukuru Housing project is one of the projects being undertaken across the country. Once complete, the project will have 13,248 units.
Owing to the high number of tenants expected to occupy the houses, the project includes a 5-million-litre underground tank to ensure an uninterrupted supply of water.
There are also high-level storage tanks holding 210,000 litres.
Equally, the project has a fire station, a day care facility, a health centre, a strip mall and waste rooms.
“The Mukuru Meteorological project is the largest single-site housing intervention in Kenya’s history. Its scale, its integrated design, and its focus on transforming informal settlements make it a landmark in public housing delivery. Residents will not only access housing, but a full ecosystem of social infrastructure,” Ruto expressed.
