Azimio Parties Resolve to Cut Ties with Gachagua After Ol Kalou

The Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition has resolved to cease all political engagements with DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua following what insiders described as untenable and divisive conduct during and after the Ol Kalou by-election.

The decision was reached during a closed-door meeting convened at Kalonzo Musyoka’s Karen Command Centre on Tuesday evening.

The meeting brought together united opposition principals and Linda Mwananchi members who expressed growing frustration with Gachagua’s style of politics.

The Linda Mwananchi group postponed their Ol Kalou rally last weekend and has been accused by Rigathi Gachagua of trying to divide the Mt Kenya vote.

Gachagua, also the DCP leader is said to have approached Kalonzo with a proposal to back his 2027 presidential bid in exchange for “half of the government.”

The offer reportedly included control over key ministries and state corporations, a demand Azimio leaders dismissed as “blackmail disguised as partnership.”

During the Karen meeting, Kalonzo is said to have briefed coalition partners on his private interactions with Gachagua, noting that while he remained open to dialogue with all leaders, Azimio could not afford to be drawn into what he termed “a politics of division and entitlement.”

The coalition resolved that any future engagements with Gachagua or his allies would be handled “strictly at an institutional level” and only through formal channels.

The Ol Kalou by-election was also discussed, where the leaders used it to show that any future plans to work together with Rigathi Gachagua will flop after DCP failed to withdraw from the race for the Jubilee Party.

The leaders accused Gachagua of using the contest to test his influence in Mt Kenya while blocking other Mt Kenya leaders from trying to campaign in the region, something that goes against the spirit of Azimio.

Formed ahead of the 2022 general election, the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition brings together more than 20 political parties, including ODM, Wiper, Jubilee, and DAP-K.

The coalition is positioning itself as the main opposition bloc, with Kalonzo Musyoka as its de facto leader following Raila Odinga’s passing last year.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Jubilee Party leader is the patron.
