Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir is the most popular candidate in the Mombasa gubernatorial race, and has been settled on by Catherine Muma led ODM National Elections Board to go for the seat under its ticket.

This follows months of scientific survey in the county, by the Raila-led party and independent pollsters all of which gave Abdulswamad a comfortable lead.

On Monday, a poll by the Consortium of Researchers on Governance (CoRG Africa) on Coast Region Key Issues and Gubernatorial Aspirants Survey shows the youthful legislator is ahead of the race at 42.5%, and businessman Suleiman Shahbal following closely at 23.6%.

Two weeks ago, an Infotrak survey showed the Mvita MP enjoys the support of 48 percent of Mombasa residents with his closest competitor Shahbal coming second at 18 percent.

A source from Suleiman Shabal’s inner circle says the business mogul is now exploring options outside ODM and is likely to run as an Independent candidate against the party after failing to clinch its ticket.
