Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has asked the regime to halt the planned importation of maize until the current harvest from Rift Valley farmers is mopped up by the government so that the farmers do not incur losses.
”CS Moses Kuria at his usual element but our Rift Valley farmers are currently harvesting maize, the importation of maize should stop until govt has mopped up all this year’s crop and avoid lowering prices that doesn’t match the inputs incurred by maize farmers,” Senator Cheragei tweeted, in response to CS Moses Kuria’s revelations the government had ordered for the importation of GMO maize.
The Trade Cabinet Secretary on Thursday announced the government had made the hard decision to allow the duty-free importation of 10 million bags of GMO maize over the next six months.
”We have taken deliberate decisions to improve the current dire food situation in the country. We have decided to allow the importation of GMO maize into the country until the food situation improves,” said CS Kuria.
Mr. Kuria added the government is ready to shoulder the potential backlash that could follow the decision.
