Ruto’s Alliance with Maina Njenga Sparks Fear of Chaos in Mt. Kenya

President William Ruto’s government is reportedly turning to controversial Mungiki leader Maina Njenga in a bid to reclaim the dwindling Mt. Kenya political support. Sources indicate that Njenga has been granted armed security, chase cars, and a fully funded operations office along Thika Road as part of the government’s strategy to penetrate the region.

While this move may be seen as an attempt to consolidate support, critics argue it comes at a high cost. Maina Njenga, who lacks genuine popularity in Mt. Kenya, is accused of running a clandestine network of thugs that thrive on intimidation and fear. Reports suggest Njenga has promised his followers significant rewards for their loyalty, including a return to controlling bus stops and markets to extort fees from locals. Such an arrangement has stoked fears of a resurgence of chaos and violence in the region, reminiscent of the outlawed Mungiki sect’s dark past.

Mt Kenya Residents are alarmed that these actions could destabilize the region, leading to economic disruptions, tension, and potentially loss of lives. Critics have also raised concerns that engaging figures like Njenga undermines the government’s credibility and could alienate voters who view such alliances as a betrayal of their trust.

Analysts believe Ruto’s government is walking a fine line by involving Njenga in its political strategy. While the Mungiki leader is seen as a conduit to mobilize grassroots networks, his controversial history and the fear of empowering a criminal syndicate have drawn widespread condemnation.
