Opinion: Gachagua Dividing Kenya to Gain Power for Self

Rigathi Gachagua is not trying to unite Kenya — he is dividing it. Since he was kicked out of government, he has been using tribal language to paint Mt. Kenya people as victims of other communities. He says the country is now about Bantus versus Nilotes and Cushites. This is very dangerous and dishonest. Kenya has 45+ tribes, but we are one country, not a collection of rival ethnic groups.

Gachagua is pushing the idea of “Bantu unity” not because he cares about Mt. Kenya, but because he wants to control the region and use it as a weapon to make political deals. He is trying to turn Mt. Kenya into a voting block that only serves his selfish goals — not the people’s needs. He is not fighting for our farmers, traders or youth. He is fighting for attention and influence.

He has also started calling coastal communities like the Pokomo, Mijikenda, and Taita his “cousins.” But where was he when they needed help with land issues, poverty, and jobs? Now that he is out of power, he wants to use them too, just to build a bigger tribe for himself. That is not leadership — it is opportunism.

We must stop leaders who use tribes to climb the political ladder. Gachagua is not building a better future for Mt. Kenya or Kenya — he is building a wall between communities. Kenya needs leaders who bring people together — Kikuyus, Kalenjins, Luos, Somalis, Luhyas and all others. We cannot move forward by dividing ourselves.

Let us say no to Gachagua’s tribal politics and yes to unity, peace, and progress.
