Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, widely known as Jalang’o, was compelled to abandon his rally in Kayole on Sunday after it descended into pandemonium, forcing the lawmaker to beat a hasty retreat.
Jalang’o, who has publicly declared his intention to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in 2027 under the ODM-UDA formation, had organized what sources described as a grassroots mobilization event in Kayole Soweto.
The gathering drew several hundred residents and was intended to bolster his support base in Kayole.
Dressed in a black sweatshirt, the MP attempted to impose order on the swelling crowd by requesting attendees form a queue for what he termed a “motivation.
“Acheni kusukumana! Pesa iko!” Jalang’o shouted repeatedly, urging the crowd to stop pushing as the situation deteriorated.
Despite his appeals, the gathering, estimated at over 300 people, continued to surge forward. At one point, the legislator was physically lifted above the crowd by supporters chanting “Tutam,”.
Witnesses at the scene said the MP’s security detail appeared overwhelmed by the sheer numbers, and after several minutes of unsuccessful attempts to restore order, Jalang’o resorted to throwing cash notes into the crowd, a decision that immediately triggered a frantic scramble.
The video footage, which has since gone viral online, shows residents diving for the money, with some falling in the melee.
