Kuria factor jolts Uhuru, Ruto camps

Gatundu South Moses Kuria and his People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) is increasingly becoming a headache to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto’s camps in Mt Kenya, following two successive wins in different by-elections.

Now allies of Deputy President William Ruto are seeking ways to contain the Gatundu South legislator whose political star seems to be on a steady rise, among his peers. Taking the war to MP Kuria’s doorstep is Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua who is categorical the MP should start backing UDA in by-elections, and not field rival candidates under his PEP outfit.

“We are sending a clear message out there that everyone who wants to be part of us will fly the UDA party. UDA is the only party for hustlers,” Gachagua said on Friday.

Yesterday, DP William Ruto accompanied by Nyeri MP Rigathi Gachagua, Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Nixon Korir (Langata) and Meru Senator Mithika Linturi met PEP leader Moses Kuria together with Juja MP-elect George Koimburi, in a bid to try to solve the impasse threatening to split Tanga Tanga’s Mt Kenya wing, into two camps.

The differences are too deep that Juja MP elected personally instructed by the DP, to show up at a new conference to unveil Kiambaa seat UDA candidate John Njuguna. On the other hand, Moses Kuria being the PEP party leader expects Mr. Koimburi to back PEP candidate Raymond Kuria during the campaigns for the Kiambaa seat.

”These guys are just feeling bad that I singlehandedly fought for Juja and won. They are jealous of my success but I want to assure them to be ready for a serious battle. PEP is unstoppable,” Kuria said yesterday.

Also, Kiambu Tanga Tanga MPs, with an exception of Kimani Ichungwa are coalescing around Moses Kuria, saying Gachagua, from Nyeri will not be allowed to determine the political direction in Kiambaa.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru’s camp is looking for ways to contain the Gatundu South MP, who also happens to be the Head of State’s MP. Juja win has painted Moses Kuria as the face of Mt Kenya rebellion against the Head of State.

If not tamed, handlers of Uhuru say, Mr. Kuria is likely to incite the entire Kikuyu mass against the regime and make the region hostile to the Kenyatta enterprise.
