2 mins read

Preparations are underway for the 13th annual Mara Day celebrations, set to take place at Maasai Mara University in Narok County, Kenya, from September 13th to 15th.

This year’s theme, “Flowing Forward Together: Conserving the Mara Basin Ecosystem for Sustainable Biodiversity and Climate Resilience,” highlights the commitment of East African nations to protect this vital ecosystem.

The Ministry of East African Community (EAC), ASALs, and Regional Development has confirmed its readiness to host the event. In a letter to Lake Victoria Basin Commission Executive Secretary Masinde Bwire, the ministry stated, “We are fully committed to ensuring a successful and impactful Mara Day that addresses key environmental issues.”

The celebrations will feature a range of activities, including a scientific conference, tree planting, exhibitions, and competitions. Dignitaries from East African partner states are expected to attend, fostering collaboration between nations.

The Mara River Basin is essential to both Kenya and Tanzania, serving as the lifeblood for the famous Maasai Mara and Serengeti ecosystems.

Last year, Tanzania hosted the 12th Mara Day celebrations, where significant agreements were reached, including a Memorandum of Understanding on transboundary water resource management.

The scientific conference on September 14th, organized in collaboration with Maasai Mara University, invites researchers, students, and government officials from East African Community partner states to discuss critical issues related to the Mara Basin ecosystem. As the countdown to this important event begins, both countries are poised to continue their joint efforts in preserving their shared natural heritage.
