The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has stepped in to provide free DNA testing for families affected by the tragic fire at Hillside Endarsha Academy, which claimed the lives of 21 pupils. KEMRI Chairperson Abdulahi Ali announced that a specialized team from the Human Identification Laboratory has been dispatched to assist in the identification of the victims.
“We are committed to supporting the families during this difficult time. KEMRI will cover the cost of the DNA testing services for the affected families,” Ali stated. He emphasized that the initiative aims to expedite the identification process and provide closure to grieving parents.
In collaboration with a multi-agency government task force, including the Government Chemist, KEMRI’s team has begun collecting and analyzing DNA samples. “The team is scheduled to receive additional tissue samples from the victims on Wednesday, following autopsies conducted by the chief Government Pathologist,” Ali added.
The fire, which occurred on Friday night, devastated the boys’ dormitory, leaving the victims beyond recognition. Parents are now providing DNA samples to aid in identifying their children.
“Our hearts go out to the grieving parents during this most difficult time,” Ali expressed. KEMRI’s laboratory, known for its advanced expertise in forensic identification, has previously provided support during national emergencies, reinforcing its role as a leader in DNA testing. As the identification process continues, KEMRI remains dedicated to assisting the families affected by this tragedy.
