Harriet Okach Steps In as KRU Chairperson

Harriet Okach is the new Kenya Rugby Union Chairperson. She takes over from Alexander “Sasha” Mutai.

Okach thanked Mutai for his service and wished him well. She promised to lead with honesty and focus on unity.

Key Change: A New Under-20 Rugby League

The Eric Shirley Shield is being replaced and a new Under-20 league is coming.

Only Kenya Cup clubs will take part. The goal is to grow young players and give them more time on the pitch. This move follows strong showings by Chipu, Kenya’s Under-20 team.

How the League Will Work

The league will run at the same time as the Kenya Cup. Each team can name five over-age players.

Only three can play in a match. Over-age players can only appear in three games in a row.

This rule helps injured players regain match fitness. But it keeps the focus on youth.

Fixing Governance

KRU plans to change its constitution. Power will shift from the Chairperson to regional leaders.

This will give more people a say and spread rugby development beyond Nairobi. The changes aim to build trust and open up leadership.

New Identity for Youth Rugby

The new league offers a chance for rebranding.

There are plans to attract new sponsors and partners.

The league will give young players a clear path from local clubs to the national team.

Call to the Rugby Community

Okach wants support from all players, coaches, clubs, and fans. She also called on sponsors and media to stand with the new plan. She said her focus is on teamwork, fairness, and growth.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re a young player, this could be your moment. If you run a club, your role in growing talent is now bigger.

If you care about fair leadership in sports, this plan gives you a voice. What role will you play in shaping the next chapter of Kenya rugby?
