Deputy President William Ruto allies from the Gusii region on Thursday convened a crisis meeting to come up with a plan, to avoid political annihilation in Kisii and the entire region, after Raila Odinga successfully managed to reconcile Interior CS Fred Matiangi and Kisii Governor James Ongwae.

Yesterday in Nairobi, DP Ruto allies led by former Constitution Implementation Commission chairman Charles Nyachae and Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi met politicians from Kisii and Nyamira counties who are leaning towards the DP. People’s Democratic Party leader Omingo Magara, MPs Shadrack Mose (Kitutu Masaba), Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango), Vincent Kemosi (West Mugirango), Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango), Alfa Miruka of Bomachoge Chache, and City lawyer Cliff Ombeta were also present.

According to Deputy Governor Maangi, the team will form a steering committee to traverse the entire Gusii region to collect and collate issues affecting residents, then come up with a blueprint that will entire the Gusii vote block to Ruto’s camp. With CS Matiangi and Governor Ongwae giving strong indications of being in one camp in 2022, it now turns out to be a huge headache for Ruto’s allies to penetrate the region which is currently under Raila Odinga’s grip.

Last week, Mr. Odinga met the senior-most leadership of the Abagusii community at a Nairobi hotel, to reconcile them after a bitter fall-out in Bonchari’s by-elections, which ODM won.

“Raila Odinga, this afternoon had a lunch meeting with a section of leaders from the Gusii region led by CS Fred Matiangi and Governor James Ongwae. The leaders agreed to put aside their post-Bonchari differences and unite for the betterment of the region,” read part of a statement from Raila’s ODM after the July 1st meeting.
