Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has vowed to rally residents of Meru and Mt Kenya East behind Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential bid.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Devolution Empowerment (DEP) Party Secretary-General hailed the appointment of Laikipia governor Nderitu Muriithi’s appointment to head Raila Odinga’s presidential campaigns board and vowed to support him in the new role to successfully run the former prime minister’s crusade for the top seat.

”In the interest of lending a hand for the success of Azimio la Umoja electoral strategy and continued prosperity for Kenya, DEP will spare no effort in supporting Muriithi in whatever shape or form that he may require especially in the Mt Kenya region,” SG Imanyara said.

Adding: “DEP has full confidence that Muriithi is up to the task for the job. He brings to the job sterling academic and technical credentials, excellence, and demonstrated management skills.”

DEP, associated with Governor Kiraitu Murungi said Raila Odinga’s confidence in Mount Kenya region will play a critical role in planning and execution of the manifesto and policy priorities of his administration once he takes over from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

An economist and financial markets expert, Governor Muriithi has over 29 years of experience in leadership and management in Kenya, South Africa, Canada, and Australia and has been very instrumental in the drive to have the derelict Nairobi-Nanyuki and Gilgil-Nyahururu railway lines rehabilitated.

He is also the current finance, planning, and economic affairs committee chairperson of the Council of Governors elected in January 2021.

Upon his election as Governor of Laikipia in 2017, Mr. Muriithi embarked on radical reforms of the county public service to make it professional and globally competitive. These efforts have been rewarded with unmatched growth of the county’s own source revenue which has doubled since the 2016/2017 financial year.

The governor who has announced he will be defending his seat on a PNU ticket is also credited with modernizing key towns of Laikipia under his Smart Towns Initiative funded partially by the World Bank’s Urban Support and Devolution Support programs and has also refocused the county public service to enterprise development to bridge the gap between development and positive social change.
