Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has threatened to mobilise Gen Zs to occupy government offices in protest against what he termed as discrimination in the issuance of national identification cards.
Speaking during a church service in Gatundu North on Sunday, Gachagua claimed that the government is deliberately frustrating young people from regions perceived to be unsupportive of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
He alleged that the move was part of a wider scheme to suppress voter registration in those areas ahead of future elections.
“On the question of IDs, we have received reports that IDs are not being issued to areas which do not favour William Ruto. We want to tell the Registrar of Persons that we will have a meeting tomorrow.
If you don’t stop discrimination and issue IDs to everybody, we shall request Gen Zs to occupy your offices across the country. We will cry to the Gen Zs because we know they are the President’s weakness,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader announced that, as the opposition, they are going to convene a meeting on Monday, April 6, to deliberate on the matter and chart a way forward, warning that if the discrimination persists, they will call for mass action.
Gachagua also lashed out at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) over recent remarks suggesting that voters registered before 2012 might need to reconfirm their details in the voter register.
The IEBC had earlier indicated that some Kenyans who registered before 2012 could be required to re-register. The commission later clarified that only those who did not undergo biometric registration in 2012 would need to register again, assuring the public that the current biometric voter register remains valid and credible.
