Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is set to appear before the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security on Wednesday 1st September 2021 at 10.30 am to give an explanation and further clarification over the redeployment of the elite GSU G-Camp from William Ruto’s security detail and replacing them with the Administration Police.
This summon by Parliament is coming hours after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei petitioned Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka to recall senators to question officials from the Interior ministry over Deputy President’s security saga.
“The Speaker has the powers to make decisions and since this being a matter of urgent national importance, I wish to request you to convene a special sitting of the Senate on Thursday, September 2, 2021, to deliberate on this matter” the letter by Senator Cherargei, which also demands the appearance of Police IG Hillary Mutyambai, Presidential escort Commandant and General Service Unit Commandant reads in part.
Last week, an entire platoon of elite GSU officers securing the DP’s official Karen residence and his private homes in Nairobi and Eldoret were withdrawn and replaced by Administration Police officers in what was seen as a downgrading of his protection.
Ruto has sensationally claimed the security reshuffle at his residence was a political scheme by people who were keen to harm him despite expressing confidence with the AP Officers currently guarding him.
”“Is it the case that suspicious persons in AP uniform have been deployed at the residence with orders to facilitate sinister schemes against the deputy president, which the withdrawn GSU refused to implement?” Ken Osinde, the DP’s Chief Staff posed in a letter to Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai two days ago.
