On June 4, 2021, Mombasa-based Dutch tycoon Herman Rouwenhourst was found murdered in an apartment in Shanzu with his wife strapped in a car.

Homicide detectives from the DCI swung with action and took over the investigations which later revealed the deceased’s wife, Riziki Cherono and the caretaker as the main suspects.

According to the police reports, Cherono recounted that five men had broken into their home and attacked the night guard before gaining access into their house.

The guard sustained serious injuries and succumbed.

Cherono further said the thugs did not demand anything but ordered her out of the room and took her to the parking lot where her hands were tied with a string and the car was driven to an unknown location.

“Three men remained in the house while one drove my car and the other one ensured I remained silent in the back seat,” Cherono’s statement reads in part.

The DCI however treated Cherono as the main suspect after three other accomplices were nabbed.

For instance, the murdered tycoon was said to have notified the wife about an impending divorce following domestic wrangles. Cherono however did not take that lightly hence plotted to eliminate the husband with whom they shared two children, aged 14 and 15 years.

In a more chilling revelation, the sleuths have unearthed how the suspects spent the money stolen from the robbery.

The main suspects, Timothy Omondi, alias Kelvin Omondi and Tonny Ochieng, the DCI has revealed went on a shopping spree just weeks after the murder.

Together with Mercy Nasimiyu, identified as a lover to one of the suspects, they built a new mansion and even purchased brand new items including a TV, Radio system, a refrigerator, a tv stand and a solar system.

Also recovered from the house was a purchase of land agreement and receipts for a recent purchase of construction materials.

A bloodstained shoe was also recovered in the house with detectives stating that it would aid in the investigations of the case.

“Rashid and other suspects still at large, to stage the cold-blooded murder. After completing their task, they broke into the safe and took off with over Sh3 Million. Cherono was later found in the couple’s Toyota Probox around Serena hotel,” the DCI said in part.
