Mt. Kenya is like a multi-million dollar car that’s traveling on a long journey. The driver must know how to drive well, and understand the route, to get everyone safely to their destination.
As we decide who will drive us we must be sure we are giving the keys to someone who knows what he is doing, and where we are going. Otherwise we will get lost, and maybe even crash the car.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua asked for the car keys in 2022. He assured us he was a qualified motorist who knew the way we needed to go. He then forcefully grabbed the keys from Uhuru Kenyatta after insulting him and his family, and drove off with us in the car.
He got lost. And crashed the car into a tree.
Today Gachagua admits that he did not know how to drive nor did he know the route we needed to go. His excuse is that he was misled and lied to by William Ruto and others. In reality he did not know what he was doing, or where he was going. But he insists he has learnt and should be given another chance to drive us with the vehicle, to a certain destination.
The question we must ask ourselves is whether someone who got lost and crashed, and now insists he was misled before, can be trusted with our vehicle and to take us to the destination.
We trusted Rigathi Gachagua once to lead our region and protect our interests. He assured us that he knew the way, knew what he was doing and would he ensure the interests of Mt Kenya were taken care of. He failed.
Today he tells us he made a mistake. Then he tells us that he wants us to trust him again to show us the way, that he now knows what he is doing, and that he will protect our interests as a region.
The Elders say that a mistake is not a mistake, unless it’s repeated. If we trusted Rigathi Gachagua again we would be making a major mistake. And we will have none but ourselves to blame.
Mt. Kenya needs a leader who understands the road, can keep the region united, can connect the region to the rest of the country, and truly fights for the region’s future. Not someone who is asking us to trust them not to repeat mistakes they made that have put us in the current quagmire.
We cannot hand over the keys of our Multi-million shilling vehicle to a guy who crashed the last car we gave him and led to clear losses, but now says he has learnt and knows how to drive better. We cannot afford another mistake.
