The Nuclear Power plant that was being constructed in Kilifi, and which residents were incited to reject, is now being constructed in Siaya.
There Kilifi chaos was orchestrated by wealthy people owning large swathes of land, beachfronts and all; who said the plant will interfere with tourism in the area.
In Siaya, the level of education among residents made it difficult to poison the area with anti-nuclear power conspiracy theories etc.
Kenya cannot develop a nuclear bomb so anything nuclear will simply deal with nuclear waste, radiation and such things. Even the element of nuclear energy is still far-fetched.
Kenya already has a nuclear regulatory authority, funded by taxpayers, located off Gataka-Embulbul Road. It does not regulate nuclear warfare in the world. The authority is mandated to provide ‘effective regulatory control in the utilisation of radiation and nuclear technology for social economic development’.
The current Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko was board chair for the authority. Current board chair is Hon. Edick Anyanga, the former MP for Nyatike.
I feel bad for Kilifi. I have relatives there. But sadly Kenya has to go on.
Right now in Kenya if you do not want development in your region the government should just move it to another region where people are development friendly — like my village!
