Gachagua’s Long Con: A One-Man War Disguised as Mt. Kenya Unity

A few days ago, a gazette notice quietly reaffirmed what many already knew — former President Uhuru Kenyatta is still the legitimate leader of the Jubilee Party.

But for impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, this was more than just paperwork. It was a brutal reminder of a truth he has tried to bury: Jubilee never died — he killed it.

In the lead-up to the 2022 elections, Gachagua waged an aggressive campaign against Jubilee, labelling it a “dead party” and urging Mt. Kenya to rally behind William Ruto’s UDA. His mission was clear — dismantle Uhuru’s influence in the region and secure his position as Ruto’s deputy. He succeeded. But at what cost?

Now, two years into office and freshly humbled by his impeachment as UDA deputy party leader, Gachagua has made a puzzling about-turn. He claims he was “duped” into joining UDA and that Mt. Kenya lacked its own party — a blatant distortion of facts. Jubilee was not only alive in 2022; it was the third largest party in Mt. Kenya. Gachagua didn’t join UDA because of necessity — he did it for political survival.

What we’re witnessing now is a desperate man trying to reinvent himself. Enter the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) — his new vehicle. But let’s not be misled: DCP is not about Mt. Kenya unity. It’s about power. It’s about numbers. It’s about Rigathi Gachagua’s personal quest to stay politically relevant.

He now says every other party in Mt. Kenya is “Ruto’s project” except his — another convenient lie. This is the same man who told us to collapse all Mt. Kenya parties into UDA, only to now turn around and accuse others of betrayal. The hypocrisy is staggering.

What Gachagua wants is simple: to fill DCP with enough parliamentary seats in 2027 to bargain his way back into power — the same strategy he criticizes Raila Odinga for. He wants to be kingmaker, not for the people, but for himself.

This is not leadership. This is naked ambition. It is the politics of deception, revisionism, and personal interest disguised as regional empowerment. Mt. Kenya must not fall for it again.
