Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has filed a censure motion against President William Ruto, citing his failure to address pressing national issues and protect the rights of citizens. The motion, presented in the Senate on Tuesday, highlights the government’s handling of recent protests and the alarming increase in abductions and police brutality.
“In his role as Chairperson of the National Security Council, the President has failed to safeguard the lives of Kenyans,” Maanzo stated. He pointed to the constitutional rights guaranteed under Article 25, stressing that such rights “cannot be limited,” particularly in light of the recent treatment of demonstrators.
Maanzo also condemned the national government’s failure to ensure timely disbursement of funds to devolved units, which he claims has crippled essential services. “The allocation to counties has seen significant reductions, causing untold suffering for Kenyans in need of healthcare and agriculture,” he added.
Further grievances aired by Maanzo include the government’s inadequate public participation in vital projects, such as the Social Health Insurance Fund and the Affordable Housing program. He noted, “This lack of engagement has marginalized certain groups of Kenyans and created tension.”
This development coincides with an impending impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana also leading a censure motion over Gachagua’s comments that threaten national unity. Tensions are high as the political landscape in Kenya continues to shift dramatically.
