Kenya’s political kitchen is boiling hot, thanks to Raila Odinga’s last week chess moves which have strongly caught the attention of President Uhuru Kenyatta, the cabals flatfooted. Reports now indicate a concerned Uhuru will meet the ODM leader this evening, to find ways of resolving any issues that might have tainted the BBI process and slowed it down.

President Uhuru’s concerns largely stem from the fear of losing control of both the Senate and the National Assembly to an Odinga-Ruto pact, something which may not only threaten his legacy but also his stay in power. The meeting will address a number of issues, including the current status of the Handshake.

Among those concerned by the Raila-Ruto talks is Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe, who says ODM Party is giving mixed signals and would only wait for Raila to comment on the meeting.

“Oparanya is telling us it was a chance meeting and at the same time saying that Jakom (Mr Odinga) was aware. Others are also telling us that Oparanya is not with Jakom — now what do you believe? We will wait and hear from the horse’s mouth,” Murathe said.

An alliance between Raila and Ruto is a concern among the president’s men. His advisors say such a combination would be a huge political headache as it would mean Uhuru would lose both Raila and Ruto from his formation and only remain with political featherweights.
