Kikuyu Elders to endorse Raila for the top seat in Nyeri

Kikuyu and Luo elders are currently in Nyeri for a one-of-a-kind event, not witnessed in recent years.

Over 2,000 elders from the two communities are expected to lead a reconciliation ceremony between the Luos and Kikuyu, which will culminate into endorsing Raila Odinga to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta next year.

“Mr Odinga is here for the purpose of peace. For now, we are not focused on politics because he has not yet declared his interests. We are focused on his ‘Azimio la Umoja’ agenda,” Kikuyu Council of Elders chair Wachira wa Kiago said on Thursday.

The former premier will then hold his Azimio la Umoja convention for the Mt Kenya West region, hosted by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga who is expected to declare his 2022 stand.

Raila Odinga will also meet Mt Kenya Youth at a forum in Kabiruini grounds as he seeks the backing of the populous youth block. Local politicians allied to President Kenyatta and the ‘handshake’ , among them current and former MPs are also expected to be in attendance.

On Saturday, Odinga meets the Nyeri business community at the Nyeri Golf Club therafter will hold several roadside rallies in Nyeri Town, Othaya, Mathira and Mukurweini.

Mount Kenya governors among them Governors Francis Kimemia (Nyandarua), Nderitu Mureithi (Laikipia), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru) and Kiambu’s James Nyoro, nominated MP Maina Kamanda, MP Kanini Kega and Mt Kenya foundation members are part of Raila’s entourage.
