1 min read

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced that all government employees are now eligible for educational loans of up to Ksh600,000. This initiative, named the Jielimishe Loan, aims to support civil servants in furthering their education.

“Do you have a government job? You can access low-interest loans of up to Ksh600,000 with an attractive 10% annual interest rate,” HELB stated on Monday, July 29. The program is designed for employees under permanent and pensionable terms, including those in the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, and various ministries.

In addition to government workers, selected employees from private companies may also apply for these loans. “We encourage all county and national government employees, as well as staff from public commissions such as the Teachers Service Commission and the Judicial Service Commission, to take advantage of this opportunity,” HELB officials remarked.

The initiative even extends to educational professionals, with lecturers and support staff at public universities eligible for the loan. Potential applicants from private sector companies can verify eligibility by emailing HELB.

With a total of 290 parastatals in Kenya, including the Kenya Revenue Authority and the National Health Insurance Fund, the program is expected to have a wide-reaching impact. For undergraduate students seeking subsequent loans, they are advised to use the USSD code *642# to submit their applications.

This proactive move by HELB marks a landmark opportunity for career advancement and academic growth among Kenya’s workforce.
