Gachagua Hints at Possible Alliance Between United Opposition and Sifuna-Led ODM Faction

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted at a potential alliance between the United Opposition and the Edwin Sifuna-aligned rebel faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), signaling a possible realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview with K24 TV and several local Maa radio stations on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), included the Sifuna-led ODM wing in the broader United Opposition lineup.

He suggested that if the faction presents a strong presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto, opposition principals currently eyeing the presidency would be willing to step aside and rally behind that candidate.

Gachagua referred to the group as “ODM B,” describing it as a key player in efforts to unseat President Ruto. He also mentioned Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah as a potential candidate within the united opposition framework, noting that leaders would support whoever emerges as the strongest flag bearer.

“Kama hawa watu wa ODM B watatoa mtu akuje, kama ni Omtatah, pia akuje, tukae chini, tuulizane nani kati yetu ako na umarufu wa kutosha wa kusukuma huyu mtu aende nyumbani. Tutasikizana,” Gachagua said.

The Sifuna-aligned ODM faction, now operating under the banner “ODM Linda Wananchi,” has been holding a series of rallies across the country, with the latest in Busia reportedly attracting large crowds.

The faction broke away from the Oburu Odinga-led wing after ODM’s top leadership proposed a coalition arrangement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Led by figures such as Siaya Governor James Orengo, the faction has recently criticised ODM’s leadership for failing to field a presidential candidate and instead backing President Ruto’s re-election bid.
