In July last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred 24 advocates the title Senior Counsel, the highest title in the land, on the country’s legal profession. Among the names of those conferred were Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narck-Kenya leader Martha Karua, and veteran lawyer Charles Waweru Gatonye.

Yesterday, Mr. Gatonye officially took over his role by lodging a personal appeal for President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Court of Appeal. In the appeal Uhuru says he was individually mentioned in the BBI ruling and was also dissatisfied by it.

”The judges proceeded to hear and determine a matter against H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta without ensuring that personal service had been effected upon him,” reads the document in part. The Head of State has taken an issue that the holder of the office of the president can be sued during their tenure. While performing the duties of his or her office.

With over 30 years of experience, Mr. Charles Waweru Gatonye is the founder of Waweru Gitonye & Co advocates. He is described as outstanding and high-class among his peers in the corridors of justice. The Senior Counsel is graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1974 with L.L. B (Honours). One of the most prominent roles he has played was working as lead counsel in the Central Bank inquiry into the sale of the Grand Regency and also the Goldenberg scandal inquiry.
