Mackinnon-Sclater Road, now known locally as the Mombasa-Malaba Highway, was the first major road to be built at the advent of colonialism from 1890.
Whenever you use a portion of it, just know you are speeding on an early colonial idea.
Sir William Mackinnon, owner/founder of IBEACO, built the road from Mombasa upto the town known as Mackinnon in Ukambani before IBEACO went bankrupt, and the sphere taken over by the British to be run as a Protectorate.
The Britons then brought in Royal Engineer Captain Bertram Lutley Sclater, who took over the construction project and build the phase between Mackinnon Town and Malaba in Busia.
Considering the trunk, as designed, was essentially one road, they chose to let the two men share the road’s name.
